Mumbai, the gateway to India in the days of the Raj, is today India's commercial capital. The city dates back to around the first century AD when the area consisted of seven islands separated by the sea.

In 1661 the port and islands of Mumbai were presented to the British by the Portuguese. In 1668 The East India company leased all of the Islands of Mumbai from the British Govt. for £10.00 in gold per year.

On independence in 1947 the Mumbai presidency became Mumbai state, and subsequently Mumbai became the state capital of Maharashtra. Mumbai is India's financial, commercial and industrial centre, and the centre of the film industry.

The Elephanta caves are situated on an island about six miles from Mumbai in the Arabian Sea. These are four rock cut temples from between 450 and 750 AD. They were originally called the Gharapuri, the `fortress city'. The Portuguese renamed them Elephanta from the elephant like large stone on the landing place. Elephanta's size and beauty, and the power of its sculptures is impressive. There is one main cave with a number of large sculptured panels and bas reliefs all relating to the Lord Shiva. The centrepiece is a massive 18 ft three headed bust of Lord Shiva.

Fisherman On BeachDay 11 : Mumbai to Goa
After breakfast transfer to the domestic airport for flight to Goa, departing and arriving . You will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel. Overnight at hotel.

Sun, sea and the sand combine to make Goa an ideal place to rest. With its 100 Km of coastline, it is a land of Golden beaches set against a backdrop of coconut palms and green rice fields. This former Portuguese colony offers some of the best un-spoilt beaches in South East Asia. With white washed buildings and Portuguese churches a Mediterranean atmosphere still exists here. Under the Portuguese it rapidly grew to rival Lisbon and many huge churches convents and monasteries were built. However, with the rise of British Dutch and French supremacy at sea, the Portuguese influence declined and so did Old Goa. Panjim is India's smallest state capital and perhaps one of the most pleasant. It retains a strong Portuguese flavor, and parts of the town have narrow winding streets. There are numerous cafes and small bars; many still have their signs in Portuguese.
